Testing the WeMo Smart Video Doorbell

WeMo Smart Video Doorbell on Randy's desk

I tested the WeMo Smart Video Doorbell because of its Apple HomeKit support. It delivers wide 223 degree coverage, clear night vision, and 10 days of motion-based cloud recording that is easy to access from my iPhone. The mounting bracket feels cheap and I ran into occasional connectivity hiccups that kept it from feeling fully reliable.

HomeKit Integration

The biggest draw for me was the Apple HomeKit support. Notifications arrive straight on my iPhone without needing a separate app. This makes checking who is at the door very convenient if you are already living in Apple's smart home world.

Video Quality and Field of View

The 223 degree field of view is genuinely wide. It captures almost the entire area in front of my door and gives a good look at anyone approaching. Daytime video is clear and the wide angle really helps monitor the porch and walkway.

Night Vision and Recording

Night vision switches to infrared automatically and produces a usable clear image after dark. The doorbell also keeps 10 days of motion-triggered recordings in the cloud. Finding and reviewing specific clips is straightforward through the app.

Installation and Build Concerns

Mounting the unit was easy enough but the bracket and angle mount feel flimsy. For a security device that sits outside on your front door, I wanted something that felt more solid and durable.

Performance Issues

I experienced occasional connectivity drops that interrupted notifications and live view. These hiccups did not happen constantly but they were frequent enough to notice and reduce my confidence in the doorbell.

Who it's for

Get it if: Apple users already in the HomeKit ecosystem who want simple phone notifications and decent video coverage.

Skip it if: People who need rock-solid reliability, sturdy outdoor mounting, or don't use Apple devices.

Bottom line

Good HomeKit integration and solid video features but mounting feels flimsy and connectivity can be unreliable.
