Philips Hue Play HDMI Sync Box on Randy's desk

I bought the Philips Hue Play HDMI Sync Box to improve my movie nights and gaming sessions. After setup it syncs my Hue lights beautifully with on-screen action from my PS5, Xbox Series X, and Chromecast. The experience is cinematic and the app plus voice control make it convenient, though the total cost with lights and bridge is high and it does not work directly with my smart TV's built-in apps.

Unboxing and Setup

The Sync Box arrived quickly from Amazon. Inside the box were the unit itself, a power supply with cable, and an HDMI cable. Setup was straightforward using the included cables and the Hue app. The user guide provided clear instructions for connecting to my TV and integrating with existing Hue lights.

Immersive Media Experience

The device syncs smart lights with any HDMI source so they respond dynamically to the content. Explosions and action scenes fill the room with matching colors. I connected my gaming consoles and streaming devices with no problems. Adjusting intensity and effects in the Hue app lets me match the mood of each scene.

Multiple HDMI Inputs and Device Switching

Four HDMI inputs let me hook up my PS5, Xbox Series X, Chromecast, and other devices at once. Switching between them automatically changes the light effects to match the active source. The box analyzes video and audio signals in real time to create the right atmosphere for movies, games, or music.

Voice Control and App Customization

Integration with Alexa and Google Assistant makes control effortless with simple voice commands. The Hue app lets me personalize light speed, intensity, and brightness. I created custom phrases for different activities like movie mode or party mode. Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support works well with modern content.

Best Paired With

The Sync Box needs a Hue Bridge for full functionality. Together they provide stable connections, multi-room control, automations, and Matter compatibility. The Bridge keeps everything off my Wi-Fi network and adds secure remote access. Voice assistants work even better once the Bridge is in place.

Who it's for

Get it if: People who enjoy movies or gaming and already have or plan to buy a Philips Hue lighting system.

Skip it if: Budget-conscious users or those wanting direct integration with smart TV built-in apps without extra devices.

Bottom line

The Philips Hue Play HDMI Sync Box creates an immersive home theater experience with excellent light syncing but is expensive and requires external devices.
